Covenant: How to Use This Study
Before Week 1: what a covenant is, how inductive Bible study works, and how to use this 12-week series alone or with a group.
Week 1: God Binds Himself (Genesis 9:8–17)
After the flood, God makes a covenant with every living thing, asks nothing in return, and hangs a sign in the sky to show it.
Week 2: Cutting a Covenant (Genesis 15:1–21)
Abram asks how he can know God's promise is sure. God answers with a strange ceremony, and only God passes between the pieces.
Week 3: A Covenant You Carry in Your Body (Genesis 17:1–14)
God renames Abram, calls the covenant everlasting, and gives a sign to be carried in the body by every generation of his household.
Week 4: God Remembers (Exodus 2:23–25 and 6:2–8)
Israel groans in slavery, and God remembers his covenant. In the Bible, God's remembering is never a lapse. It is his promise moving into action.
Week 5: Blood of the Covenant at Sinai (Exodus 19:3–6 and 24:3–8)
At Sinai, God reminds Israel what he has already done, offers them a calling, and seals the covenant in blood as the people answer, "We will do.”
Week 6: Steadfast Love and Faithfulness (Exodus 34:5–7)
Right after Israel breaks the covenant with a golden calf, God tells Moses his name, and at the center of it are steadfast love and faithfulness.
Week 7: Loved Because He Loved You (Deuteronomy 7:6–12)
Why did God choose Israel? Not because they were big or impressive, but because he loved them and kept the oath he swore.
Week 8: Choose This Day (Joshua 24:14–27)
At Shechem, an aging Joshua gathers all Israel to renew the covenant. The whole people must decide together whom they will serve.
Week 9: A House Forever (2 Samuel 7:8–16 with 23:1–5)
David wants to build God a house. God answers that he will build David a house, a kingdom and throne established forever.
Week 10: When It Looks Like God Broke His Word (Psalm 89:1–4, 28–37)
Psalm 89 sings God's sworn promise to David, then cries out when it seems broken. Lament is not the opposite of faith; it is faith inside covenant.
Week 11: Written on the Heart (Jeremiah 31:31–34 with Ezekiel 36:24–28)
In the darkness of exile, God promises a new covenant: his law written on the heart, a new spirit within, and sins remembered no more.
Week 12: The New Covenant in His Blood (Luke 22:14–20 with Hebrews 8:6–13)
At the Last Supper, Jesus takes the cup and names it the new covenant in his blood. Every thread of God's covenant faithfulness meets in him.
