Day 16: Glory Has Weight
Read: Psalm 8:3–9
Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.
— Psalm 8:5 (ESV)
Reflect
Yesterday David asked why God would pay attention to tiny people under an enormous sky. Today he answers with something surprising. God did not just notice us. He crowned us.
The word for "glory" is kavod, related to a verb meaning "to be heavy." Glory in the Bible often carries that sense of weight. Substance. Worth. The kind of presence that cannot be ignored. When the tabernacle was finished, "the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle," and Moses could not enter (Exodus 40:34–35).
And here, God takes that same word and places it on human beings as a crown.
That should change how you see yourself and everyone around you. We are small under the stars, but we are not specks. We are creatures made to carry weight. Made to rule, to care for creation, to reflect the God who made us.
Many of us treat ourselves as light. Negligible. Easy to dismiss. Some of that is honest humility. Some of it is forgetting what God has done. Psalm 8 pushes back. You are not weightless. God crowned you with glory to carry.
But notice how the psalm opens and closes: "O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!" (vv. 1, 9). You carry glory so that his name looks majestic in all the earth.
Across Scripture
Psalm 8 echoes the creation account, where God makes humanity in his image and gives them dominion (Genesis 1:26–28). Hebrews 2:7–9 says the psalm is fulfilled in Jesus, "crowned with glory and honor." And Paul says that as we behold the Lord, we "are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another" (2 Corinthians 3:18).
Sit With It
Where are you treating yourself as light, as if what God crowned does not matter? Carry your God-given weight today, for the sake of his name.
Pray
Teach me to bear the glory you gave.
