Day 29: Guest in God's Tent

Read: Psalm 15:1–5

O LORD, who shall sojourn in your tent? Who shall dwell on your holy hill?

— Psalm 15:1 (ESV)

Reflect

Psalm 15 opens with a question. Who gets to stay with God? Who may live in his presence?

Before we get to the answer in the verses that follow, look closely at the question itself. "Who shall sojourn in your tent?"

The word "sojourn" is yagur. It means to live somewhere as a resident alien. Not a native. Not an owner. A guest who has been taken in. In the ancient world, a sojourner lived on someone else's land under their protection. He was hosted, cared for, sheltered, but the land was never his.

That is the picture of how anyone lives in God's presence. You do not own a place there. You are invited.

The second line says, "Who shall dwell on your holy hill?" The word for "dwell" comes from the same family as the word for the tabernacle, the tent where God's presence lived among Israel. To dwell there is to live near his presence.

This matters before you read the rest of the psalm. Verses 2 through 5 describe a person of integrity: walking blamelessly, speaking truth, keeping promises. It would be easy to read that as a checklist for earning your way up the mountain. But the opening question points another way. You do not conquer the mountain. You are received on it. Still, the character in verses 2–5 is real, and God's guests are meant to have it. Only one Man fully fits verses 2–5. In him we are received, and in him we begin to look like the guest this psalm describes.

Across Scripture

God told Israel, "the land is mine. For you are strangers and sojourners with me" (Leviticus 25:23), and David prays, "I am a sojourner with you, a guest" (Psalm 39:12). Psalm 91:1 speaks of the one "who dwells in the shelter of the Most High." Hebrews calls the faithful "strangers and exiles on the earth" (Hebrews 11:13), and Jesus promised, "In my Father's house are many rooms" (John 14:2).

Sit With It

You do not conquer the mountain; you are received on it. In God's tent, you are a guest. How does that change the way you come to him today?

Pray

Receive me as your guest today.
