Day 32: Set Before Me
Read: Psalm 16:7–11
I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
— Psalm 16:8 (ESV)
Reflect
David does not say, "I felt the LORD near me today." He says, "I have set the LORD always before me." The word is shivviti, "I have set" — a deliberate placing.
Attention to his presence is something you place.
The phrase "before me" carries a picture of face to face, within sight. The same idea sits inside Genesis 2:18, where the woman is made as a helper "fit for" the man — one who stands opposite him and corresponds to him. To set the LORD before you is to put him where your eyes will land.
The way David says it also tells us this was a decision already made, and one still in force. He did not set the Lord in front of him once and then drift. He made the choice, and he is living inside it.
Then notice what follows: "because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken." The placing comes first. The steadiness comes after. His presence steadies.
Most of us wait for a feeling before we act. David acts, and the feeling is not the point. The Lord is there whether you sense him or not. The question is whether he is in your line of sight.
Across Scripture
Jewish tradition still hangs this verse as a plaque in homes and synagogues, a reminder placed where the eye will fall. On the day of Pentecost, Peter quotes these lines as the voice of Jesus himself, the Son who kept his Father before him and trusted him all the way through death to resurrection (Acts 2:25–28).
Sit With It
You do not have to wait for a sense of God's presence. You can set him in front of you, the way you set a picture where you will see it. What will you place in your line of sight today?
Pray
I set you before me. Stay in view.
