Day 38: Rescued Because He Delights

Read: Psalm 18:16–24

He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me.

— Psalm 18:19 (ESV)

Reflect

David has been pulled out of deep waters (v. 16). He has been rescued from an enemy too strong for him (v. 17). Now he is set down in "a broad place" — open ground, room to breathe after being hemmed in.

Then he tells us why. Not because he earned it. Not because he prayed well enough. "He rescued me, because he delighted in me."

The word is ḥafets, "he delighted." It holds delight and desire together — taking pleasure in someone and wanting them.

The rescue comes out of the delight. The reason given is God's affection, not the psalmist's merit. The next verses speak of David's integrity (vv. 20–24), but even his faithfulness is the fruit of God's grace, not the price of it. And this is a royal psalm (v. 50), fulfilled in Christ, the Righteous One in whom believers are accepted.

Many believers carry a quiet assumption that God helps them the way a tired parent helps a difficult child — out of duty, maybe with a sigh. This verse does not allow that picture. The one who pulled David out of the water was glad to do it.

He rescued me because he delighted in me.

Across Scripture

In Psalm 22, mockers take these very words and throw them at a sufferer: "let him rescue him, for he delights in him!" (Psalm 22:8). Zephaniah says the LORD "will rejoice over you with gladness… he will exult over you with loud singing" (Zephaniah 3:17). And Jesus tells his frightened disciples, "Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom" (Luke 12:32).

Sit With It

You may believe he helps you out of obligation. The psalm says he acts out of delight. Where in your life do you need to hear that today?

Pray

Thank you that I am delighted in.
