Day 51: He Brings Me Back
Read: Psalm 23:1–4
He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
— Psalm 23:3 (ESV)
Reflect
"He restores my soul." The word is yeshovev, "he brings back." It comes from the same family of words as returning and repentance — the same verb behind "reviving the soul" in Psalm 19:7. Beside green pastures and still waters, it most naturally means he refreshes my life. But the word can also picture bringing back what has strayed, and that fits a Shepherd too.
Here the verb is in a form that can describe ongoing, repeated action. It is not a one-time rescue. He keeps bringing me back. Again, and again, and again.
That is what shepherds do. Sheep do not stray once and learn their lesson. They drift. They nibble their way from one patch of grass to the next until they are lost, often without noticing. A good shepherd does not give up after the first time. He goes and gets them, as many times as it takes.
Then notice why he does it: "for his name's sake." The motive is his name, not your performance. He does not bring you back because you finally deserved it. He brings you back because of who he is.
And the same verse says where he takes you once you are back: "in paths of righteousness." He does not only rescue you from the wrong road. He sets your feet on the right one.
Restoration, again and again.
Across Scripture
Isaiah promises that the LORD "will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places" (Isaiah 58:11). Read Psalm 19 and Psalm 23 side by side and you will see that both the Word and the Shepherd restore the soul. Peter puts it together: "you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls" (1 Peter 2:25).
Sit With It
You will drift today. The promise is not that you won't, but that he will keep bringing you back. When you notice you have wandered, don't hide. Let him.
Pray
Bring me back again.
